Green Acres loses to Kew 4 & 5

The result above was not quite how I envisaged playing my 50th game of senior pennant for Green Acres. The pain of losing to your archrivals in sport cuts deep. It's a hollowness that lingers long after the last handshake is offered.

The hours spent training, strategizing, and visualizing victory all feel pointless in the face of defeat. It can be demotivating, making you wonder if all the effort was worth it. You might find yourself replaying the game in your head, analysing every mistake. Self-doubt creeps in, and anger simmers, both at yourself and your opponents who seemingly had the rub of the green.

But the sun did rise on Saturday morning!

Representative pennant is golf’s version of a team sport, the loss can extend beyond the players. The caddies, supporters, family, and members wear the defeat too, a golf clubs’ pride is bruised, and the celebratory beers left unopened.

However – turning up on the biggest day for 4 consecutive years is a massive achievement. After some reflection we will set new goals that will excite the squad, we will continue to master specific skills, refine our strategies, and focus on building an even stronger team-first culture.

Results as follows:
  • John Mansfield - WON
  • John Vidovic - WON
  • Graeme Harris - LOST
  • Gary Seymour - LOST
  • Michael Wood - LOST
  • George Zhang - LOST
  • Rodney Andersen - LOST
  • Rob Mallard - WON
  • Paul Downey & Roger Schmitt - WON

Our opponents Kew went undefeated throughout the season. We only lost two matches (inc the final). Both losses were at Gardiners Run. Our season was full of highlights and some incredible individual performances but alas pennant is a team sport. Team performance and individual performance are two sides of the same coin. They're both crucial for achieving success, but they focus on different aspects of achievement. For us to continue to be contenders we must focus on team performance and support each other in our individual goals. In a perfect world, strong individual performance fuels exceptional team results.

Now I would like to tell you about the team who represented Green Acres throughout the 2024 YCSP season.

In GA order:

John Mansfield
The anchor of our team. John stands on the first tee and says to himself “come on John” and then proceeds to take apart his opposition. Won all his 5 matches. The best player in the competition.

John Vidovic
What a season from Vido – played #1 for much of the season and is without doubt our most improved player. A stellar performance in the final when it mattered most.

Graeme Harris
Another player who has improved his game over the years and makes himself available each week for the team and rarely loses. A contender for this year’s MVP.

Gary Seymour
No one fights harder than Gaz in senior pennant. He has played at the top of the order for over 10 years and gives 100% every week. A true team player.

George Zhang
The heart and soul of our team. George would be the first to admit that his season was not to the high standards he sets himself. But George did everything we asked of him, and we are a better team for him being part of it.

Paul Thaw
It was the God of Thunders first season and for us to be in contention next year we need That back playing where he belongs – at #1. A big pre-season required. Sadly missed in the final.

Rob Mallard
A breakout year for RM in senior pennant winning all bar one contest. Also, an MVP contender who stood tall during the final.

Mike Wood
Another debutante who will be better for the run after his first season of senior match play. Like Thawy, Mike is our future, and we need to ensure that he is given every opportunity to improve his game.

Rodney Andersen
Another stalwart of our team - Rodney went through the regular season undefeated.  Another contender for our MVP – thanks for your efforts over the years Rodney.

Bryan Harper
Another MVP contender, Harps is the quintessential match play golfer who gives it his all when he steps into battle. Found himself in the 4-Ball team once this year which goes to show how strong a team we can field when everyone is available. Another player who was sadly missed in the final.

Roger Schmitt
Another debutante who found his happy place in the 4-Ball and improved with every contest. Roger, like Thawy and Mike is our future and I for one saw firsthand some amazing shots played under immense pressure during the final. A long pennant journey awaits Roger.

Brian Wasley
A Captain in waiting if ever there has been one. Wasa has done it harder than most the past few years, but I know he loves senior pennant and 2025 can’t come quick enough for him. We missed you Wasa.

Steve Pryor, Cam MacSween, Brett Ryan, David Simpson
I can’t speak more highly of these gents. When needed they stepped up, played, and won. The reason we have made the past 4 finals is that our list runs deep with talent. Hopefully next year they can navigate their work/life/golf balance and play more games should their form demand it.

Finally, I would like to thank the club for their invaluable support throughout the season. To our manager, Ernie Mensforth, thanks for a wonderful job herding all the cats each week in trying to find a winning combination and to Mark & Tristan from Golf Ops in ensuring we have every opportunity to improve our skills.

And then there is our caddies & supporters with special mentions to Brian Chappel, Travis Cox, Ron Ferrari, Martin Sheahan, Dicky Mole, Serge Sabbadini, Chris Bate, Bob Crowley, Warren Parkes, Richard Adezio, Peter Robinson, Paul Shannon, Wayne Ibbot, Dave Matotek, Garry Clarke & Stephen Dodds. You guys make it real for us and your commentary on our What’s App group is priceless.

To all the members at Green Acres who follow our fortunes each week, rest assured, the hunger for success remains strong. We'll be back, better, and stronger than ever in 2025.

See you all around our great club in the not-too-distant future.

Round 3 - Green Acres vs The Heritage GC

Heritage win 4.5-0.5

Sunday saw the previously undefeated Youth side take on a strong Heritage team at Settlers Run in difficult conditions. Rain pooled on the greens early but soon after it stopped we were back to playing quick and true. Heritage had struggled earlier in the season but have been regaining a few of their stronger players.

The score line definitely didn’t reflect the days play, and this is shown in the fact 4 of the 5 matches went to the 18th.

The clear highlight of the day was Paddy ‘The Baddy’ Rath playing at 1. This was Paddy’s first ever game of pennant and he was being thrown in the deep end at #1 against a scratch marker. He was also only informed on Saturday he was playing after our usual wonder kid Josh Dahlson was a late out.
With visions of replicating Lewis Read’s infamous Box Hill victory at #1 in the men’s, Paddy managed to get to 18 all square. But unfortunately it wasn’t to be as he pulled his drive left and his opponent was able to make a solid par to win the final hole.

At #2 we had Toby Cook who fought valiantly but also lost the final hole to lose 1 down.

Will MacIsaac at 3 birdied 17 to get 1 up coming down the last, but his opponent absurdly binned a 30 foot putt for birdie on 18 to tie their match. Will had also been unlucky earlier in the round after hitting a Tiger-esque low stinger into a poorly placed wooden bollard in front of the tee, which sent the ball sailing back over his head, 30m behind the tee box!

Tom Carroll at #4 came up against a strong opponent for that position who defeated him 7&6.

Unfortunately at #5 I couldn’t get the job done either losing the 17th to go 1 down and was unable to win the last hole to tie my match.

While the day was bad on paper, the results were close and the equation for us stands simply still; win next week and we secure a finals berth.

Well done to the men on their whitewash victory and commiserations to the seniors.

Sunday's match against Spring Valley at Sanctuary Lakes was anticipated to be a real challenge.

Spring Valley, after finishing 7th in Division 2 in 2022, did not participate in 2023. To re-enter the competition in 2024, they were relegated to Division 4.

Despite facing opponents with a combined handicap 25 points lower than our players, our team displayed remarkable determination and effort throughout the matches. Their resilience was evident and praised by their caddies, as reflected in the comments below.

Deb played extremely well hitting fairways and greens all day. However, her opponent was extremely good in all aspects of her game and was often one putting and dropping balls in from bunkers. Deb’s opponent was playing off +0.21. Caddy Graeme Harris

Despite a rocky start Anne fought back with some stunning shots on the 5th and 9th holes. She maintained good composure at the beginning of the second nine to hold her opponent and squared several holes in a row but unfortunately her opponent was just too good on the day. Caddy Pippa Devlin

Fiona played extremely well; the best I’ve seen her play however her opposition was just too good. Caddy Leeanne Whitty

Barb drove well on all holes and her fairway shots were straight. After being 4up her opponent brought their A game and Barb was unlucky to lose on the 19th hole. Caddy Lee Rimes

Megan had a terrific battle with her opponent; 10 squared holes and trading pluses and minuses. An unfortunate loss on the 12th when her ball got caught in tufted grass led to being down 2, however, she fought back with great wedge shots to take the game to the 18th hole. Caddy Jane Rodgerson

Sue lost the first hole to a birdie and had a par herself. She bounced back to even the holes with pars when eventually the ’par feast’ ended and her opponent developed a lead. Sue fought back with 3 wins. Then her opponent dug deep and took the lead. Sue putted well but was eventually out gunned by a younger opponent with greater distance off the tee. Caddy Steve Poole

Lisa had a tightly fought game. She had many halved holes and some great tee shots onto the par 3’s. She worked hard to make it to the 17th finishing 2 down. Caddy Justine Grover

We have a promising opportunity for our first win against Gisborne, scheduled to be played at Box Hill GC on Sunday, April 14th off the 10th tee at 11.30am. We encourage all Green Acres members to come out and show their support for our players. Your presence will undoubtedly uplift and motivate the team as we strive for victory.

Thanks to Team Manager, Barb Pinchbeck, and supporter Bev Moore for their encouragement and help.

The final result:

Green Acres v Spring Valley GC at Sanctuary Lakes lost 0-7

  • Deb Guilmartin           5&4 loss
  • Anne Minter            7&5 loss
  • Fiona Bunting          8&7 loss
  • Barb Cummins         19th hole loss
  • Megan Keith             2 holes loss
  • Sue Poole                5&4 loss
  • Lisa Cochrane          2&1 loss

Golf Vic Results Page - Sunday Women's Pennant

The Women’s Friday Pennant Team played against Box Hill at Rossdale. We travelled what seemed a long way to Aspendale and were rewarded with beautiful weather.

Jenn chipped beautifully to the pin for several pars to overcome a tough opposition. The opposition caddy asked, ‘does she always do that’? Jenn won 4/2.

Anne found the kikuyu grass a real challenge, however the strength of her short game contributed greatly to her staying in the game and winning a few holes. Lynn Zhang was our emergency player and was also Anne’s caddy. It was the first time Lynn caddied a pennant match and Anne valued Lynn’s very much. Anne lost 5/3

Bev had a tough match against a young, talented opponent with an amazing short game. Bev, however, had her own amazing chip shots to win holes with a couple of pars to stay well in the match up to the turn. Her perseverance was not rewarded as her opponent gave her very few opportunities to take control. Well done Bev for a sterling effort. Bev lost 5/4.

Heather was a great contribution to the GA team. She played steadily and won 2/1 using her skills and experience. Her approach shots and putting were her strength and advantage on so many holes.

Lorraine played consistent golf to be 4 up after 9. Lorraine continued to place the ball in the right position to win the next 3 holes with a great chip in birdie on the 12th to win. It was a pleasure to be her caddy.  Lorraine won 7/6.

Sue battled hard all day against a steady opponent who putted very well. Needing to win the 16th to continue the match, Sue managed to do that even after hitting her second shot into the water which just shows a hole/match is never over. Sue lost 2/1.

GA had 3 wins and losses for the day. Needing a final win, Trish was square going up the 18th.  She played steadily with a spectacular finish, winning the match 1 up with an amazing long putt.  This gave GA the 4/3 win for team on the day.

The top 2 teams are Heidelberg and Latrobe both of which have yet to have a bye (as host club) in the final 2 rounds. If GA can maximize the number of games won in the next 2 rounds we have a chance of finishing in the top 2.

The next round will be played at Heidelberg 8.00am off the 1st tee vs Medway on Friday 12 April and we would love to see Green Acres members come out and show their support.
The final result:

Green Acres v Box Hill GC at Rossdale GC won 4&3

  • Sue Shannon             2&1 loss
  • Trish Seccombe         1hole win
  • Lorraine Woolley         7&6 win
  • Heather Judd              2&1 win
  • Bev Moore                  5&4 loss
  • Anne o’Hehir               5&3 loss
  • Jenn French                4&2 win
