24th May 2024
Volunteers at Green Acres

This week is International Volunteers Week, and it's appropriate that we acknowledge and thank all members who donate their time and effort to improve our Club.

Most members would not be aware of some of the areas where volunteers work with staff undertaking all sorts of activities, but I want to share those with you:
  • Bridge - a large group of mainly women members, play bridge each week and the organisation and results reporting is done by a few members led by Carolyn Hart.
  • Course volunteers - a group of between 4 and 12 volunteers, led by Vice-Captain Chris Bate, work with our course staff on many activities to assist on work needed to be done.
  • Flowers - we have a small group of women members who each week and for special events, make sure fantastic flower arrangements are in place in the Clubhouse.
  • Projects - members such as Terry Cox and Phil Johnston, with specific expertise and interest, provide guidance for most of our projects including, for example, project management, plumbing and excavating for our new maintenance facility.
  • Legal, insurance and financial advice and assistance - we have several members who have helped us over the years in these areas.
  • Members willing to sit on Working Groups, The Risk Committee and the Code of Conduct Panel, set up by the Club.
  • Members sitting on Sub-Committees - we have six Sub-Committees - Golf, Course, Women's, Member Services, Risk and Executive, which generally meet monthly, and sometimes more often. Around 20 members are making a great contribution to the successful running of Club through their participation in these Sub-Committees.
  • The Board - volunteering to be an Officer or Director on the Board, sometimes requires significant input of time and effort in attending meetings and reviewing and or developing plans and actions.
  • Members who put their hands up to organise things like group golf getaways - think women's annual getaway, or the various men's getaways organised by Bob Crowley and others.
  • Members who help out with representative golf - Team Managers, caddies and supporters
  • We have members who have volunteered at functions and events doing things like DJ'ing and photography.

There are probably others who I have not mentioned but on behalf of our Club and your fellow members, please take on our sincere thanks for the fantastic work you all do, and if there are other members who think they might have time and the inclination to get involved with volunteer activities at our Club, do it, it will help the Club and you will also get a lot of enjoyment out of it!

The club is saddened to advise the passing of Maurice Morgan. Maurice will be remembered as a long-standing member of Green Acres of 29 years, and once his golfing days finished, one of the “Table of Knowledge” group of members who meet at the club for lunch every Friday, as recently as last week.

The Club extends its deepest condolences to Maurice’s family and friends.

Notification of funeral arrangements will be published when known.

14th Green

After some time using a temporary green, we are pleased to advise that the 14th green is now ready for play again, reopening Saturday 25th May.

To help mitigate wear and tear, and as per club rules, please refrain from walking golf buggies across greens and on green aprons. On the 14th especially, please make sure that all buggy traffic goes to the left of the greenside bunker on the LHS.

W.H. Richardson Trophy- Mixed Canadian Foursomes

This Sunday 26th May, the W.H. Richardson event will be held in the afternoon.

Although the timesheet is closed, if you wish to participate with your mixed pair (golf only), play in the daily medley Canadian foursomes, or enjoy a social 18 holes, please contact the Golf Centre to arrange a booking.

Social tee times will be allocated behind the Mixed Canadian Foursomes field.

The afternoon competition is Medley Canadian Foursomes (a nett event), and only registered participants will be eligible to qualify, with the top 8 pairs advancing to Canadian Foursomes Matchplay. Please note that catering for golf and dinner is now closed.

Car park - line marking

This is a reminder that next Tuesday, the 28th May, all car parks at the club will undergo line re-painting.

Line marking is scheduled to begin between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m and will continue throughout the day until complete. The work is weather-dependent, and rescheduling will be necessary if rain is forecast, but at this stage, fine weather is predicted so it looks a good day to have the painting done.

This means all car parking on-site will be unavailable from the beginning of the day. We anticipate the temporary inconvenience of parking on the adjoining streets is only necessary until we have these necessary works completed.

The Member’s main car park, the basement car park, and the Staff/Director’s car park will be closed to all vehicles so that the contractors have unfettered access, and then each area will reopen as the paint in the car park dries.

The Member’s car park will be reopening from approximately 11am, with all going to plan.

For everyone attending the club on the 28th May from early in the morning, the only parking options will be on the adjoining streets, until each parking area reopens during the day. Those arriving at the club in the afternoon should find most of the car parks completed and reopened.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate all Member’s understanding and patience while these improvement works are undertaken.
