Welcome to this week’s GA News, featuring details on turf replacement, a recap of the Women’s Committee Day, and two major events to get excited for on the Golf calendar —the Composite Course Day and the Anniversary Cup.
50-Year Member - David Tudor
We were privileged to have David Tudor back in the clubhouse for lunch today after a month of absence.
David was not present the night of the 30, 40 & 50-Year Member event last month but today was presented with his 50-year membership medallion whilst celebrating lunch with family and friends.
David is a regular for Friday lunch and has been sitting at table 1 with other members more commonly known as the "Table of Knowledge” for over 30 years, every Friday.
Congratulations David!
Daffodil Day - Thursday 22nd August
Next Thursday is Daffodil Day. Green Acres Golf Club is proud to support Daffodil Day, an initiative of the Cancer Council dedicated to raising awareness and funds for cancer research.
This day aligns with our ongoing commitment to health awareness within our community and at our golf course, reflecting the club’s broader promise to acknowledge and support important health causes.
We encourage all members to donate by clicking the below link or to show their support by wearing something yellow next Thursday 22nd while at the club.
Let’s come together to make a difference in the fight against cancer.
A few weeks of dry weather, sunshine and wind has seen the course start to transition out of winter.
With the favorable weather, we have been able to spray all couch surfaces for poa annua. Fertiliser inputs have started, with the aim to rejuvenate tired areas from winter traffic and our dusting of greens program has started with 4 cubic metres of sand applied over all greens.
We have been consciously aerating greens for the past 12 weeks to combat slow infiltration rates after rainfall and to help with anaerobic conditions in the rootzone. We are happy with the results and feel the greens are healthy enough to start lowering mowing heights back down to 3mm and for grooming to recommence.
Santa Ana Turf
Next week will see attention paid to some areas on the course for low irrigation trench lines and replacing some undesirable common couch areas.
The process in these areas is to strip out the old turf with a top maker and then mega rolls of Santa ana is replaced.
Areas on the course that have had this process done over the past 2 years are showing positive signs for better wear tolerance and minimal poa annua emergence due to a tighter growth habit.
Members are advised that contractors will be on site to carry out this work.
The map above identifies the areas on holes 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 16 and 18 that require turf replacement. We have now been able to source appropriate Santa Ana turf from South Australia.
The larger shaded areas on the map identify large turf areas that have not recovered from the flood and winter damage. Most of these areas have a large amount of common couch which is not as strong as Santa Ana couch.
The more straight line shaded areas on the map are main irrigation lines that will also be returfed.
In addition to this turf being laid, staff have commenced with raising sprinkler heads and low lying trench lines. Works commenced on hole 2 this week and we will progressively work our way through the course until it is finished.
The photo above shows the finished product.
This is a time consuming task with each sprinkler head taking around 1 hour to complete. We have approximately 160 heads to raise, meaning we will see the works carried out over the next 2 months coinciding with daily preparations of the golf course.
Works will commence with a top making machine removing the top layer of turf in preparation for the mega rolls to be laid out. This will be followed by mega rolls being delivered on site to be laid in place. We hope this work will be completed from Monday 19 – Tuesday 27 August. Proposed timeline;
Monday 19 August – normal 1 tee start, all areas complete top making (top layer of turf removed) in preparation for mega rolls to be installed.
Thursday 22 August – 1 tee start so contractors can lay as much of the new turf without delay from member play.
Friday 23rdAugust – normal 1 tee start so contractors can finish laying the new turf without delay from member play.
Tuesday 27th August – If there are any delays with delivery, weather or time to lay turf, this day will be used as a contingency and contractors will work in with member play to complete the works.
Finally, our gardener Peter is doing an outstanding job rejuvenating most of the overgrown garden beds around the course. We are in a position now to start replenishing them with desirable plants that suit the area.
The Composite Course Event
The Composite Course Charity Event is a collaborative golf tournament between Green Acres and Kew Golf Clubs, where members from both clubs come together to play a unique course that combines holes from each club.
Held annually, this event not only offers participants a distinctive golfing experience but also serves as a powerful fundraising initiative for various charities. Over the years, the event has raised significant funds for causes such as bushfire relief and, more recently, FareShare, a charity dedicated to providing nutritious meals to those in need.
In 2024, the tradition continues, with members uniting once again to support a worthy cause. Information and booking sheet below.
Please note that we are limited to 60 people so get in quick!
The Anniversary Cup will again be hosted by Spring Valley due to course works being undertaken by Latrobe Golf Club. The event will take place on Sunday 22nd September.
This is a golf and dinner event between Green Acres, Spring Valley, Latrobe and Patterson River golf clubs who all formed as clubs back in 1948. Latrobe were the inaugural winners last year of the 75th birthday Anniversary Cup.

L & B Carlyon Bowl- Sunday 25th August- Dinner Cancelled
Due to low registrations for this event, we have decided to adjust the starting format and post golf catering. The event will now revert to a two-tee start, and the dinner portion of the L&B Carlyon Cup has now been cancelled.
The golf component will still take place, with a draw being conducted for those who have registered. Tee times will begin from the 1st tee between 12:34 pm and 1:06 pm, following the normal competition field.
The Women’s Committee Day was held on Tuesday under beautiful conditions, with over 60 people participating. Those representing the President’s team were wearing pink and those on the Captain’s team were dressed in blue. The competition was a 4BBB Stableford played off the orange tees, with the top ten aggregate scores contributing to the team score.
This day marks the handing over of the Women’s Committee and has been celebrated since the club's early days in 1954 and since then, the Captain’s team has won the event 32 times, including last year, while the President’s team has won 30 times, last claiming victory in 2022.
The President’s team claimed their 31st win, convincingly defeating the Captain’s side, 445 points to 417.
Interclub Round 4 - Hosted at Green Acres
What an exciting game it was between GA and Latrobe today, in Round 4 of Interclub, hosted at Green Acres. It was a close contest with both teams having had 3 wins when Kerry Grabau was 1 down going down the 18th hole. There was a tense moment when her opponent putted in to square the hole and won the match.
Final score Green Acres 3, Latrobe 4
All competitors played well and a huge thank you to all the players, caddies and spectators who were there to support GA and watch what was an excited finish.
