Bunkers

A major point of discussion at the meeting was the condition of the bunkers. It was agreed that the course staff will put additional hours into the care of the bunkers over the winter period, now that grass cutting has ended for the season. We will also be looking at the rakes again. The current rakes are an effective tool and the best available for the task, if used properly, but there is a concern that for many reasons they are not being used effectively by members.

The current rakes do require a different technique compared to the way many people are used to raking a bunker, which you watch in the video tutorial below.

This of note when using the rakes;
  • Use two hands
  • Use a forward and backward motion
  • Use your feet to cover over the larger depressions

One of the positives for the condition of the bunkers from the use of the current rakes is that there is far less disturbance to the surface because of the length of the Tynes. This has stopped the clay base coming to the surface and has reduced the movement of sand in the bunkers reducing the build up of sand at the back of the bunkers and the thinning of the sand at the front of the bunkers.

However, we are interested in what is most effective for members and so, as a trial, we will be putting the old rakes back into the bunkers on the 4th hole to see if they produce a better result than the rakes currently in use.

Our concern, however, is that most of the issue does not relate to the quality of the sand or rakes but to member behaviour. It is clear that many members just do not rake the bunkers after using them correctly or sometimes at all.

There are too many footprints and depressions in the bunkers for proper care to have been taken. Even after the course staff have prepared the bunkers in the morning, by the afternoon they are in a terrible state.

After using a bunker it should be left in a condition such that you would be happy to land in it and play a shot from it.  Members have three mandatory elements of course care that is standard on every golf course, fill your divots, fix your pitch marks and rake the bunkers.

Leave the course in a condition that you would be happy as the following golfer to play it yourself.

Course Report

The Superintendent, James Stewart, provided his course report for the month of March which is linked below.

As identified in the report. the course is in transition for the winter season with fairways cut at 15mm for the final time this week. As a result course staff will have time to address other areas of the course and you will have noticed that the edges to the paths and tombstones have been cut this week. The major priority over winter will be continuing to lift turf areas around sprinklers heads that have subsided since the installation of the irrigation system.

The 3,500 square metres of Santa Ana turf laid on the fairways last month is knitting in well and while these areas remain out of play at present, it is expected that they will be in play shortly.

The 14th green has also showed promising signs and was this week cut to 5mm with a program in place to gradually reduce that height for play at some point in May. The 14th bunker that is currently out of play will also be ready for play when the green is open. A number of wet spots across the course have been identified for attention including at leaking valve beside the green on the 8th, short of the green on the right hand side on the 13th and to the left short of the 16th green.

Tree pruning continues as a regular maintenance activity with the arborists returning in the week of 22 April to address encroachment over fairways.

In general, the Sub-Committee was pleased with state of the course and recognises the efforts of the course staff in their dedication to their work.
