Women Membership strategy

The Board meeting held at the end of June considered the matter of the declining number of women joining the Club and ways to try to address this.

It resolved to have a Working Party consider all options for increasing the level of female representation at the Club and it endorsed the following actions for immediate implementation:

  • (i) Implement a 5-year plan that sees the Gateway to GA offer available on an annual basis ie: as a starting point, 5-month introductory membership to start with for up to 30 women;
  • (ii) As part of the 5-year Plan, ensure new member programs have the capacity for targeted programs for multiple levels of capability ie: beginners, intermediate and advanced;
  • (iii) Develop a strategic Marketing Plan to support the 5-year Plan for increasing women’s membership.
  • (iv) Develop a detailed member induction package that includes rules sessions, golf etiquette plus rounds with experienced golfers; and
  • (v) Introduce a system to match partners for mixed events.

Website Development

The Member Services Sub-committee Chair, Tim Thorne, addressed the meeting and advised that the work on the development of the new website had been paused. Whilst disappointing that we have to delay launch, we are adamant that we will deliver a website of the highest standard and a new plan to do that will need to be developed and make sure we have the best photography, video and latest design features we can get. Once a revised timeline is developed, members will be advised accordingly.

Financials and Membership

The P & L report for the month showed a $27k negative to budget result. This was mainly due to unbudgeted clubhouse repairs and lower than budgeted subs due to category transfers. Cash reserves were $5.02m at the end of the month. At the end of June, the Club had 1351 financial members with 34 new members having joined the Club so far this financial year.

Course Matters

The meeting was advised that the first “text” draft design philosophy of the Course Enhancement Plan (CEP) had been received from our course architects and would now be reviewed by members of the Course Sub-Committee. Once this review has completed, feedback on the draft will be conveyed to the Course Architects (Clayton and Kruse) so that detailed design of the CEP can be drawn for presentation to members. It is anticipated that this process will take a few months.

In answer to questions on course remediation, the Vice Captain advised that irrigation trench work and other “course scars” would be addressed as a priority in Spring once the turf comes out of dormancy. Some “off play lines” such as between 6th tee and 8th green will be turfed but turfing on play lines (on fairways) will not be completed until closer to Spring as the turf comes out of dormancy.

In answer to questions on course remediation works, the Vice Captain advised that irrigation trench work and other “course scars” would be addressed as a priority in Spring once turf is available.

Course Works

Works are nearly complete in the area defined between the rear of the 8th green and left of 6th tee. The area has seen a major transformation which we are really happy with.

The garden bed has been defined with turf now laid around its perimeter. There has also been a significant amount of foliage removed to ensure enough sunlight gets through to the garden bed and turf for optimum health.

Next week we will finish the area behind the 8th green and mulch the remaining garden bed in preparation for the arrival of tube stock to be planted.

We also have contractors measuring the area between the 4th green and 5th rear tee with the view to replace the turf that is currently there. The turf is struggling on the back of the last floods with too much silt in the profile, so we are going to replace it. This will be done via the same method of removing the existing turf to 30mm via a turf top make machine and replacing it with mega rolls. We hope to be finishing this project in the next two weeks. During works members will be directed left of the 4th green to get to the 5th front tees until the area is ready to be opened.

KHRYSP Round 4 -  at Royal Melbourne - GA Vs Southern 2&3 loss

It was a thrilling result. Leeanne fought from 3 down and almost got the win. The difference in handicaps was min 5 to max of 9 (all in favour of Southern).  The team spirit was upbeat and realistic and needless to say Lynn and Wendy were quietly (and deservedly) jubilant.

The rough at Royal Melbourne is deceptively rough, especially in the bracken, which a few of our team experienced. Another major challenge was managing to keep the ball on the green.....so many just kept rolling.....rolling......

Highlights as follows;

Leeanne hit a great shot onto the green on one of the difficult par 3's well guarded by bunkers. On the 9th hole Leeanne got into 2 green side bunkers and managed to square the hole.

Heather was one of only 2 players in the group to land on the green of one of the difficult par 3's and she parred the hole.

Lee hit a great shot out of the bracken on the 9th to land on the edge of the green.

Wendy played a great game with thought and confidence. On the 13th she chose to lay up and put herself in a great position in front of the green and clear of the multitude of bunkers. She chipped on from 40 mts out to within 50 cm of the flag and parred the hole.

Lynn played a beautiful game and was up by 1 or 2 all day. She stayed focused on holding onto to her lead, held her tempo when the pressure was on right through to the 18th where she won 1 up.

Jenny Smith, a veteran pennant player for GA, who has just returned to golf after more than 12 months following an injury, made a gallant decision to withdraw from playing and offered to continue in the emergency role. Jenny's consideration and support of the team is one of the best examples of leadership and commitment I've seen in a long time.

Final scores:
  • Heather lost 5 & 4
  • Lynn won 1 up
  • Leeanne lost  3 & 1
  • Lee lost 6 & 5
  • Wendy won 2 & 1

Next round Monday 8 July at Kew  8.35am 1st tee.
